Short daily assignments

As you've learned, characterization is the development of character. A writer can use direct characterization when describing a character's traits or indirect characterization. Indirect characterization, as you've learned, is when the author shows a character's personality through actions, thoughts, feeling and dialogue, or through another character's observations and reactions. The author relies on the reader to put together the clues in order to figure out a character's personality. It's important to remember that characterization relies more heavily upon the character's traits than upon just his or her physical appearance.

1. As you read, keep a chart for each character. Under headings such as "Actions," "Dialogue," "Physical Description," "Traits," etc., keep track of these characters in brief notes. These will be collected, so keep your writing clear and well-spelled.

2. You will be given some handouts to be turned in that same day. Please save time to write accurate, well-punctuated and spelled replies. Some assignments will be forwarded to me by Ms. Cowper and returned to her. Other assignments will be sent me via gmail. Please read the Amicitia English Site often, to be sure you don't miss something.

3. We will continue here on line as well as on Skype. I am available for your questions and will reply within 24 hours.

PS: Your geography assignment (the one where you are to write about a place, hopefully in Africa, that you are familiar with including man's impact on it and the effect of its characteristics on the people living there) will be extended to be due this coming Tues. It will be added to next term's grade. I'm hoping to see some excellent work from you. Any questions? If you need help, just ask and give me some time to respond.

PPS: Don't forget your memorization for the poem, "Seven Ages of Man." Try to do it without your paper in front of you and see how far you get each day. At the end of the week, Ms. Cowper will grade you on your memorization and add it to your term grade.
